Over the last couple of weeks Year 6 have been working with East Hampshire Community Rail Partnership and South Western Railway to prepare for rail travel as they move on to secondary school and increasingly have more independence with their leisure time. The first session was classroom based where the children explored train timetables, how to buy a ticket, safety on the railway and what to do in the case of emergencies. The children asked lots of questions and listened really carefully to all the information given.
Today was a more practical session where Year 6 met Mark and Andy from South Western Railway to take a train journey from Liss to Liphook and from there walk to Bohunt School before getting the return train back to Liss. The children had to simulate buying a ticket, find information about train times, and answer questions about rail safety and things you could find at the station, before boarding the train.
After walking to Bohunt and making the return journey, the children felt far more confident about traveling independently and gave good answers when questioned on what they had learned over the two sessions.
We would all like to thank Lucy, Mark and Andy who made these sessions possible and provided such a quality learning experience for the Year 6 pupils.
