Experimenting with sustainable building materials

Class AS have been looking at different forms of building as part of The School Grounds We’d Like project. We were particularly interested in the way that Kafuro Primary School can make structures out of cane, banana twine and banana leaves. We researched stories of people who have built structures out of plastic bottles and decided to try the building technique for ourselves.

Working with Mr Haycock, Class AS learned how to make cement and papercrete (a more efficient and environmentally friendly mortar) and began building walls with plastic bottle filled with coloured water. After leaving them to set for 24 hours we found that the structures created were very strong.

With this knowledge at least one of our groups is planning to build a structure using plastic bottles. More details later in the week.
